Music and dancing was and still is a very important part of the aboriginal culture in Australia. For example one of the biggest ceremonial dances and is called the Tiwi Islanders, these performances are important for bringing people together. Dances were passed along from generation to generation. Although the aboriginals didn’t have a formal language they would draw on rocks with tools. This process is still practiced by the aboriginals today. They have the longest continuing religion in the world. It is shown by the Rainbow Serpent mythology that is recorded in rock shelter paintings. They are believed to be 7,000 years old. Other rock art shows more Ancestral Beings that are important to the Aboriginal religion tens of thousands of years ago.

The aboriginal people first settled in australia and new zealand in 40,000 B.C.. And in 1788 the land was taken from them by Great Britain. It was called by them a penal colony, a place to send their prisoners. Sydney was found by Captain James Cook. The native people of new Zealand are different from the aboriginals, known as the Maori. In 1840 the Maoris signed a treaty with the Britains called the Treaty of Waitangi, this gave britain control over New Zealand. However they each translated the document differently so the Maori people had no idea they had just given up their control. Right now in the Australia/ Oceania region these people make up less than 3% of the region.

The theme of geography that this best fits would be movement. Because the British people in Australia moved there and took it over. Over 6.5 million people migrate to Australia per year. Not nearly that many people move out of Australia. Most of these people are over 60 and are moving there for retirement. Also not many of the people that do come stay long.

So clearly, one of Australia's main problems currently is migration and the loss of indigenous people. The aboriginal culture is a very important part of Australia and must be maintained. It is one of the oldest civilizations and cannot be lost. They had the oldest cutting tools for rocks and the oldest religion.
