Terraced Farming

Background
Terraced farming is an ancient technique originally developed by the Inca people. It is one of the earliest forms of farming, and is a great example of human-environment interaction. Terraced farming is no different than regular farming other than its location. Terraced farming occurs alongside a mountain or large hill. This is because of the lack of regular flat land to farm on. Although it started out as just a clever use of space, terraced farming also has positive side effects like the reduction of soil erosion. It also protects water quality by intercepting agricultural runoff and, in doing so, retaining moisture in the soil which helps to grow crops. For these reasons terraced farming is widely used today in places like Thailand and China.

Types are:
• Broad-based which are farmed on both sides.
• Steep backslope which have a steep downstream
slope in permanent cover.
• Narrow based which are steep on both sides and
have permanent cover planted on both sides.
• Level terraces which are used to conserve moisture
as well as control erosion.

Theme of Geography
In terraced farming, there are different themes of geography used. The most obvious would be human-environment interaction. This is because terraced farming is taking unused land and making it into something productive. The land used for terraced farming is typically a mountain or a large hill. This land is usually unusable because of its terrain. However through the use of human-environment interaction, terraced farming is a success. Terraced farming creates more crops and helps the local economies of the countries they are in but also create more fertile soil and typically only uses natural water coming from the hill or mountain.

Effects
Terraced farming is a positive effect of human-environment interaction. It is changing unused land into productive farming ground. This helps people from all over, in different ways. It helps the farmers who are maintaining the crops and making money. It also helps the local people because they can buy the food produced on the farm. Finally, terraced farming can help the economy of the country it is in. This is because, like in any other farm, crops and or animals are sold or traded locally or sometimes even globally. This is a factor that shows that terraced farming is something that can affect the whole world, even people in the United States, because many products consumed by Americans, especially ones that come from south-east Asia, are created on terraced farms. This is a positive effect especially because even though terraced farming will not bring in a lot of money, it will still help significantly because some of the countries where terraced farming is used are very poor, and could use extra money. These countries already make money from regular farming, so it only makes sense that terraced farming is such a success.
