Rabbits in Australia is a big issue because there are millions of them everywhere and they breed every single day. They destroy people's property and it cost millions of dollars in damage each year because of them.Rabbits were brought to Australia in 1859 by the 1900's Australia was overrun by rabbits. And then a fence was built to stop them from coming. But it didn't work that well. Then in 1995 they made a virus for the rabbits. And it worked but then some were immune to it and it failed. So now they try to kill them. The people and the government are involved in this because they are a huge issue because they cause alot of damage and the people are tired of dealing with them. rabbits are causing damage and they are rapidly growing. They mate all the time and there are millions mybe even billionas of them, and they will continue to grow. In Australia, there are a lot of rabbits. Thomas Austin is credited with releasing 24 wild rabbits in his Barwon Park property near Geelong in Victoria 1859. They were first sighted Northern Territory in 1894 at Charlotte Waters, by 1900 there were populations in Western Australia. The rapid spread of these rabbits led to the destruction of large vegetation, and extinction of many plant species. “In 1907 the longest anti-rabbit fence was finished. It was constructed by the Western Australian Government and it was 1 833 kilometres long. It was from Starvation Boat Harbour, in the south, and Cape Keraudren. One problem was that by the time that most rabbit-proof fences are finished, rabbits have already crossed into the area that the fence is trying to keep them out. The rabbit issue currently affects mostly farmers or people in Australia that own land. It directly affects all farming or vegetable or livestock and land owners. It effects them because of how the rabbits dig holes into the fertile soil and that soil overtime becomes bad unfertile soil and nothing can be grown on that soil which causes farmers to lose money and their livestock because if nothing grows their animals cannot eat and will die and if there are no vegetables or fruits grown no money made.
What currently is being done to solve or help with their rabbit infestation is that when the people find the rabbits warrens which are the holes and tunnels that they dig and live in they fumigate them and also destroy them. Another resolution that they come up with is fencing around farms so rabbits cannot get in any way possible. They also allow landowners to shoot the rabbits and hunt them to get rid of them.
The reason we should care about this issue is that we buy food from Australia and if no food is being grown or livestock dying then we get no meat either and the people there will also lack of food and will end up starving and dying because of these rabbits.
