Human Environment Interaction: HEI is the act of humans modifying their surroundings to better suit their needs.
Some examples of this includes the canals in Venice, Italy,
- The city was actually built on around 170 islands in the middle of a lagoon
- The people who settled there eventually reinforced the islands and built their houses on them
- In Venice, there are no streets. People get around using boats in the canals
And the polders in the Netherlands,
- The Dutch built large walls and used windmills to pump the water off the land
- This allowed the Netherlands gain 40% of its country back
- The only way to keep all the water out is to continuously pump out the water using canals and pumps
How might this technology help the U.S.?
Venice and Netherlands are both using technology to constantly control flooding. I think we could use this technology in the U.S. to control the flooding after natural disasters. After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans was terribly flooded because of the failure of the Dikes surrounding the city. If we had the technology to prevent that from happening, we could've saved thousands of lives and prevented the estimated $125 billion in damages to the city.
