What are some of the reasons why the people of the world are not helping? How can they say that this is a horrible thing, then at the same time do nothing to stop it, even though they have the power to do so? How many lives does it take to show the sincerity of the fragile situation?Approximately how many peacekeeping troops are needed to stop the problem?
\n
\n2. This situation is the result of the issues mankind has forced upon the area. Things such as "... politics, religion, poverty, racism, [the] breakdown of the rule of law, geographic isolation, lack of infrastructure, decades of conflict, and... oil developement" (A Manmade Disaster 2). All of these things affect the people in this area, causing conflict. These conflicts could have been resolved, however they were not because of the indecicive feelings of other nations. As Reeves states, the situation could have been prevented if not for these manmade problems.
\n
\n3. Reeves cares about this disaster, because it affects other people in the world. He isn't selfish, and he sees the connections between people. He wants to be apart of something that is larger than himself, something that helps other people. I personally belive that everyone should care about these injustices. They are wrong and horrible. People should want to help others, because if they were in the same situation they would want help as well. People should reach out to help others despite their beliefs, or their way of life, because behind all of our differences, we are together. We are not the same, however we are one.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"16831665","body":"1. There are many reasons for the UN's lack of decision in Sudan. One of the main reasons is the sad fact that they do not want to risk the lives of their soldiers. The UN has no problem sending in troops when their isn't a threat, however once there is the threat, they become less open to offer their help. "On August 31, 2006, the Security Council of the UN approved Resolution 1706, which called for a UN peacekeeping force of 22,000 to replace the... overwhelmed African Union force of 7,200. But President al-Bashir rejected the resolution... [calling it] 'a hostile act'. [Therefore] the Security Council has pressured Sudan with words only" (3). Unfortunately another reason is because of the areas of interest of the Security Council in Sudan. This interest is Sudan's oil reserves. Three members of the Security Council; China, Britain, and France, have contracts to access the Sudanese oil, and another member, Russia, along with China are selling weapons to the Sudanese government. As a result of this, they are reluctant to pull out and really begin fighting in this area. They are working with the Sudanese government, and therefore do not want to alienate it by enforcing the UN resolution.
\n
\n2. Some of the measures the UN and NATO could use in Sudan to help stop the genocide is to simpally sign a peace agreement. Unfortunately this isn't as easy as it sounds. The agreement calls for a creasefire. This has been tried before, however it requires cooperation from both sides. After seeing the peace agreement a refugee coments "We know Bashir. We have seen him make agreements and break them 10 minutes later" (2). Another measure NATO could enforce is a no-fly zone over Darfur to prevent and government air attacks. Also it prevents the Sudanese officials from sending off the countries oil wealth, and blocking all its oil exports. These things could help stop the genocide.","dateCreated":"1258086059","smartDate":"Nov 12, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"shendricks1994","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/shendricks1994","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1256526135\/shendricks1994-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"16832909","body":"1. One of the official explanations for the US's inaction is because they "could not have done much to stop the horrors" (4). Actually, as Power states, "in the rare instances that the United States did act, it made a difference" (4). Another explaining excuse is: "We didn't know." In response to this Power states, "... although US officials did not know all there was to know about the nature and scale of the violence, they knew a remarkable amount" (4). The last explanation is the fact that the US had a lack of knowledge or influence on the situation. The truth, revealed by Power is that they simply did not have the will to do so. They did not want to help. "They believe that genocide was wrong, but they are not prepared to invest in the military, financial, diplomatic, or domestic political captital needed to stop it" (4).
\n2. Power concludes the the real reason for the US's inaction is the the last one. The fact that the US officials did not want to act. Based upon my own knowledge, I cannot say I completely agree with her. I would need to know more about the issue. However, I do partly agree with her interpretation. I think there are many other reasons as well, but a main one is just that they did not want to help others. They let their selfish thoughts and desires get the best of them, and thought of themselves over others. They did not put themselves in the perspective of the people who are affected by the situation. They kept themselves in their own outside view, not wanting to come out of their comfort zones.
