Your friend has recently moved to the 13 colonies from Europe. As the Enlightenment and enlightenment ideals begin to spread through Europe, you decide you must write him/her a letter describing this new change that seems to be sweeping the nation! The European Enlightenment is going to directly influence the Revolution in America. (which you do not know yet)

Your task for today, is to write a letter to your friend in Colonial America, detailing these new ideas that the philosophes are spreading and convince him or her of how life in Colonial America could be better. You need to include the following information:

Describe what life was like before the Enlightenment (what was the government like, how is the average person treated?)

Who are some examples of Absolute rulers and how are they ruling?

Describe the views of at least THREE different philosophes during this time… what were their views about people? What were their views on government? How did they impact the Enlightenment?

Use your book and your notes…be creative!!!
Dear Susan,

The new I ideas that these philosophers are spreading and absolutely crazy! There are so many things to learn about, and new books to read.
Life over here is ok. Thomas Hobbes supports absolute monarchy like whats going on over here in europe with louis the 14. With him being so greedy and all being pampered all the time.Whatever he wants he gets, and we can rebell because hes over a days way away. But, some new guys are comming along like John Locke who supporets monarchy. Mary Wollstonecraft supports women rights and education which is a change for the best. They all suport liberty, property and pursuit of happiness which is cool. The average person isnt treated that good right now its all about the king, but soon its all going to be diffrent.

I’ve heard you moved to one of the 13 colonies! Good thing for us during this time period the Enlightment has begun. You’re probably wondering what Enlightment is, it is known for the “age of reasons”. We’re both under an absolute monarchy right about now but thanks to this Enlightment it a response to absolutism. I think right now we would both enjoy being part of a democracy way much more than absolute monarchy for many reasons, but I’m only going to tell you two reasons. Since we’re both not like Thomas Hobbes, who he believes that in every human we should give up our individual liberties rights in return for social order. But on the other side John Locke you’ve probably heard about him, he once told us that every individual should have life, liberty, & property. His idea for us if we didn’t get this kind of rights, then that we should overthrow this government. Before Enlightment king Louis the 14th moved the nobility to the palace of Versailles so that they would be farther from us. Hopefully we will sooner or later be part of a democracy! Hope to see you soon !
Dear Swag,

You are living under a monarchy, over here there has been enlightment and our lives are a whole lot better. Monarchy was horrible we didn’t really have many rights but now we have a lot more and we have a lot of freedom. You guys should over throw your government because life would be so much better. King Louis XIV was one of the rulers and he took away everyone’s power so he had complete control. France was once a rich country but thanks to his love for war they became a poor country. The Philosophes think that we should have freedoms; they believe we should have life, liberty, and property. One of them also believes that women should have more rights. Also they believe we should have no slavery because it is not right to treat other humans like that. They impacted us a lot because their views are getting spread around and people are following them

Life has been increasingly hard here in England. King Louis XIV has taken power and is ruling without any guidance. He has taken all of the power from the Nobles and moved them to his palace which he built with Frances money! There are people that are resisting him they call themselves the Philosophes. One of the first people to oppose King Louis was John Locke he said that government was meant to protect the people’s rights and not be taken away by some Monarch. Baron de Montesquieu who wanted the government to have check and balances which would make it so no one person would have too much power.
